What To Do If You Are Being Hazed

If you are being hazed, it is important to remember that you are not alone, and hazing is never okay. At UNC Charlotte, we are committed to creating a safe and respectful environment for all students. Below are the steps you can take if you find yourself in a situation where you are being hazed.

Recognize That Hazing Is Never Acceptable

Hazing is harmful and can involve physical, emotional, or psychological abuse. It is important to recognize that no matter the context—whether it’s a student organization, team, or social group—you have the right to say no to hazing. Hazing is a violation of university policy and can be illegal.

Speak Up and Set Boundaries

If you feel safe to do so, assertively communicate that you do not want to participate in hazing. Setting clear boundaries can be empowering, and it’s important to stand up for yourself. Remember, you have the right to refuse any activity that makes you uncomfortable or harms you. You deserve respect and to be treated with dignity—no matter what group or organization you are part of.

Seek Support from Someone You Trust

If you feel uncomfortable addressing the hazing situation directly, talk to someone you trust. You do not have to keep it a secret. Demanding secrecy is a common practice designed to protect people who are abusing others. You have a right to tell anyone anything you want about what you are going through, even if you were made to promise that you would not tell. Talking with others may save yourself or others from harm.

Report the Hazing

If you are experiencing hazing, it’s important to report it. UNC Charlotte offers several ways to report hazing confidentially:

  • Online Reporting: You can submit a report through the UNC Charlotte online reporting form.
  • Campus Police: If you are in immediate danger or need assistance, contact UNC Charlotte Campus Police at (704) 687-2200 or via the LiveSafe app.
  • Student Accountability and Conflict Resolution: To report in person or seek guidance on process and resolution options, you can contact SACR at (704) 687-0336.
  • Dean of Students Office: Not sure how to categorize what you have observed or experienced? The Dean of Students Office can offer guidance and support at (704) 687-0345.
  • Anonymous Reporting: If you’re concerned about privacy or fear retaliation, you can still submit an anonymous report. Send an anonymous text to +1 (855) 612-5840. Your identity will be protected. Anonymous text messaging using RealResponse is actively monitored Monday – Friday, 9am – 4pm EST, when the university is open. This platform is not intended for emergency use.

Seek Counseling and Emotional Support

Experiencing hazing can take a significant emotional toll, and it’s important to take care of your mental health. UNC Charlotte offers confidential counseling services through Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and can provide support for dealing with the emotional impact of hazing. Phone: (704) 687-0311

Talking to a counselor or therapist can help you process what you’ve experienced and develop healthy coping mechanisms.

Document the Hazing Incident

If you are safe and able to do so, consider documenting the hazing incident:

  • Write down details of what happened, including dates, locations, people involved, and the specific actions that occurred.
  • Save evidence (photos, videos, messages, etc.) if it is safe and appropriate to do so.

This documentation can be important if you choose to report the hazing or if further action is needed.

Protect Your Well-Being

Your safety and well-being should always come first. If the hazing is escalating, or if you feel unsafe in the situation, consider removing yourself from the group or organization. Your mental and physical health is more important than any group or tradition.

Learn About Your Rights

As a student at UNC Charlotte, you have rights to:

  • A safe and respectful campus free from hazing, bullying, or abuse.
  • Report hazing without fear of retaliation or judgment.
  • Confidential support and resources to help you navigate through this challenging time.

Remember: You Are Not Alone

Hazing is never acceptable, and no one should ever feel pressured to endure it. At UNC Charlotte, you are part of a community that values respect, kindness, and safety for all students. If you or someone you know is experiencing hazing, we encourage you to reach out for help and support.

You deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. Don’t hesitate to speak up and take action.
